Contrary to modern beliefs, there is an abundance of magical and esoteric traditions that have persisted in British Isles for centuries quietly alongside Christianity, sometimes in plain sight. Families maintain old faiths, guilds gather in secret, and esoteric traditions are passed along. In this presentation we will unravel some of the misconceptions that surround this important aspect of intangible cultural heritage and the precise ways these traditions continue to renew, adapt and thrive while maintaining their core principles. The goal of this discussion is not to identify or reveal secret organizations, but to gain new insight about how living traditions have continued to exist, despite efforts to eradicate them.
